I missed doing this preview for Winter 2015 and since it’s impossible that I’ll be able to recap fully a drama for Spring, I decided to do another preview.
Anyway, just like the title I used for this post, Spring 2015 dramas that stars Johnny’s is definitely gonna be deep with well-thought story lines, complex characters, and not your usual Johnny’s-idol-dramas. Of course, since the stories and characters aren’t typical, a lot are already raising their eyebrows on those Johnny-starring dramas, like the usual, “Can they act?”, “Can they pull-off the character?”, and those “this drama is gonna flop”, and so…
Oh well, haters or lovers, here is a short preview of dramas that you must not miss this spring.
[All dramas included only stars Johnny’s in lead role]
Starring : Kimura Takuya (SMAP), Ueto Aya, Mizuno Miki, Tanaka Kei, Suzuki Kosuke, Yamaguchi Mayu, Arai Hirofumi, Mitsuishi Ken, Watanabe Ikkei, Oikawa Mitsuhiro, Nishida Toshiyuki
The gist : Ieji Hisashi (Kimura Takuya) lost five years of his past memories after an accident. He sees his present wife, Megumi (Ueto Aya), and son as nothing but strangers who wears masks on their faces. Coincidentally, he feels a strange attachment towards his ex-wife and their daughter. Ieji tries unravels his lost five years with the helped by 10 mysterious keys with him. As he takes on a journey to discover his past self, he discovers a cold-hearted man versus his present kindhearted self.
What to expect : Hayashi Koji of BOSS and Iryu series is the scriptwriter so I’m expecting a lot! I love BOSS and even though I’ve only seen one season of Iryu, both dramas definitely knows how to keep you on your seat while forever guessing what’s gonna come next. I expect twist and turns that will surely leave me wanting for more and even though amnesia is a trite plot, discoveries about past self has always been kinda scary. The plot is somewhat similar to the novel, We Were Liars, I love that novel even though I wish that the character never recovered her memories, I want the same excitement and thrill from I’m Home. More than the hopes that this drama will rake in ratings, I just want another decent KimuTaku drama.
Random flail : After reading this drama’s synopsis, I know that I’m gonna watch this. I’m a sucker for amnesia stories. Anyway, this may seem weird but I’ve never seen a drama that starts Ueto Aya. Really, I haven’t seen Attention please! even though Ryo is there.
Starring : Aiba Masaki (Arashi) , Sawajiri Erika, Arimura Kasumi, Adachi Rika, Fujii Ryusei (Johnny’s WEST), Tanaka Mirei, Yamaguchi Sayaka, Horiuchi Keiko, Mashima Hidekazu, Sato Jiro, Takada Junji, Takenaka Naoto, Minami Kaho, Terao Akira
The gist : A story about stalkers in multiple proportions with the entire Kurata family having their own share of stalker who harasses them and make their life seemingly unliveable.
What to expect : This is Aiba’s first Getsu 9 drama and teaming-up with Ikeido Jun of Hanzawa Naoki fame might sound exciting but other’s think that Ikeido is so overrated. Anyway, I haven’t seen Aiba do a complex character with equally complex story, Last Hope and My Girl were so-so, but I hope that he came prepared with this suspense drama where his acting skills will surely be put to test.
Random flail : Fujii Ryusei also stars in this drama as the stalker ex-boyfriend and I think that the role suits him. haha. Other than that, Sawajiri Erika looks like “others” in the drama poster above but I hope that she plays a major role in Aiba’s life. I’m not asking for a love story but I can hope for something else more.
Starring : Yamashita Tomohisa, Kuriyama Chiaki, Kubota Masataka, Kudo Asuka, Kikuchi Fuma (Sexy Zone), Tanimura Mitsuki, Omasa Aya, Kaai Gamon, Ishida Issei, Kusakari Tamiyo, Hagiwara Masato, Ishimaru Kanji
The gist : Shiratori Sakuto (Yamapi) plays a mentally-retarded patient turned genius through a brain surgery after a successful lab test on a rat named Algernon. However, Algernon new found intelligence fades and eventually dies, and Sakuto realizes that the same fate might also happened to him.
What to expect : Nojima Shinji is the writer for the Japanese adaptation of this Daniel Keyes‘s original. I liked Nojima’s past works, he has this way of mixing fantasy and reality together and make it seem completely possible to happen. Anyway, Yamapi’s role as a mentally-retarted is so far his most complex character yet and even though he is flooded with detractors, I just want him to nail this one. Dead-fish eyes or whatever, I expect Yamapi to do wonders in this.
Random flail : Kikuchi Fuma plays a brain researcher, it’s not that hard to play that role (I think), but he has to do a lot of convincing if I were to believed if he is a brain researcher.
Starring : Tabe Mikako, Okura Tadayoshi (Kanjani8), Yoshida Yo, Yaotome Hikaru (Hey!Say!JUMP), Nakamura Yasuhi, Katsumura Masanobu, Ishii Masanori, Mitz Mangrove, Seto Saori, Suda Yusuke, Ibu Masato, Kishimoto Kayoko
The gist : Kuroi Maya (Tabe Mikako) is a super sadistic detective and good-natured Daikanyama Shunsuke (Okura Tadayoshi) finds himself as her unfortunate partner.
What to expect : Since this drama is a manga-adaptation, expect some weird stuff to happen. I don’t have high expectations but I’m just happy to see Tabe and Okura together since Yasuko to Kenji. Okura was really lame back in Yasuko to Kenji, I mean, just seeing his posture is enough to make you cringe and he acts such a diva. Okura isn’t the best when it comes to acting but since he has worked with Tabe before, I hope that they won’t look so awkward in this one.
Random flail : I haven’t seen Yaotome in a drama since Ikemen desu ne, I heard that he did well in Dark System Koi no Ouza Ketteisen so please give him lots of exposure!
Starring : Watase Tsunehiko, Inohara Yoshihiko (V6), Hada Michiko, Tsuda Kanji, Fukikoshi Mitsuru, Taguchi Hiromasa, Hara Sachie, Nakagoshi Noriko, Satomi Kotaro
The gist : Detectives of First Investigative Division’s Ninth Section are all individualistic but they are united by their strong sense of justice.
What to expect : It’s the 10th season of this successful deka drama so I can’t say more.
Other dramas this season with Johnny’s in supporting roles:
Hey!Say!JUMP‘s Inoo Kei stars in this drama about a long-standing bookstore who is trying to make ends meet with the rise of online bookshops.
In a nutshell, I’ll definitely watch “I’m Home” and “Do S Deka”. I will check-out “Flowers for Algernon” and “Yokoso Wagaya e” if I have extra time. For non-Johnny’s, “Yami no Bansosha” and “Dr. Rintaro” sounds good.
That concludes my Spring 2015 preview, enjoy your spring dramas offering.
